West Coast University SWOT Framework Discussion Replies

I just need two replies to my peers. As long as it responds, and has a reference if need be.

Original question:

What is SWOT? Give explanation and example. How does SWOT help deal with changes?

Be sure to apply concepts from the readings and research. You must cite (with reference) at least one source: your textbook, scholarly resources, or ATI textbook in current APA Style.

Chris:

SWOT stands for strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, and threats. Swot analysis is used in the decision-making process for areas such as nursing and business. “A SWOT analysis is commonly used in strategic planning or marketing efforts but can also be used by individuals and groups in decision making. Using the SWOT analysis, the individual or team lists the strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, and threats related to the situation under consideration” (Yoder-Wise, 2019). An example would be a nurse working in the emergency department for 10 years and wanting to consider requesting a transfer to the medical-surgical unit. Swot helps deal with changes by identifying the strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, and threats of an organization. It then helps identify the areas needed to change in order for the organization to thrive. SWOT’s use in healthcare has been principally confined to identifying the key factors, arranging them in a matrix, and reflecting on them to develop an improvement plan or strategy (Elzaga Rebollar, et al., 2020). SWOT is important in identifying ways that the three positions of leadership, followers, and management can be effective.

SWOT refers to the strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, and threats pertaining to a particular organization. As Benzaghta et al. (2021) assert, performing a SWOT analysis of an entity allows the management to make adjustments where needed in order to maximize efficiency and productivity. Strengths are internal factors that give a competitive advantage to the organization against its rivals (Gurl, 2017). Some examples include possessing unique technology, having a highly skilled workforce, or owning a key factor of production. Weaknesses are areas that an organization is not good at and place it at a disadvantage to its competitors (Gurl, 2017). This could be poor systems or having an inadequate skilled workforce. Opportunities are factors that could be utilized to achieve success (Gurl, 2017). They include things like favorable policy changes and bulk buying to reduce costs. Threats are external factors that present a risk to the organization’s sustainability in the industry (Gurl, 2017). Such factors include changing regulations, shortage of key raw materials, and other obstacles. According to Benzaghta et al. (2021), performing a SWOT analysis helps an organization to effectively manage change by identifying the strengths that could be utilized to make it happen as well as the weaknesses that need to be addressed when planning and implementing a change initiative. The information acquired from a SWOT analysis also helps to identify and take advantage of opportunities arising in the market. Finally, knowing the potential threats to an organization is important when implementing changes because it allows change leaders to plan how to mitigate those threats in order to ensure a successful change management process.
