De Anza College Prenatal Gender Selection and Risk Discussion

Yes, choosing the sex of your child is technically possible. Sex selection is an option for couples who want to avoid passing sex-linked genetic disorders to their children. It also appeals to parents who have children of one sex and want to have a child of the other sex. (This is sometimes called “family balancing.”).

Assignment:

Share your opinion and respond to at least one other classmates post (include the name of the student you respond to). Reflect, Reveal, Explain, Support, or Debate…express yourself with as much precision as possible in 75 words or less as you discuss the following, (no reference required):

  • Do you think it’s a good idea to let parents choose the gender of their child? Why or why not?
  • What factors might enter into a decision?
  • Consider the following situations in your response:
  • The parents are concerned with having a boy with an X-linked disease such as Duchene’s muscular dystrophy or hemophilia.
  • The parents already have five girls and want a boy.
  • The husband is the only male in his generation and wants a boy to “carry on the family name.”
