    Presenting Issues:

    Jeannette and Miguel are seeking counseling to help resolve what Jeannette calls “Miguel’s late-life crisis.” She shares that she is very content with her life right now and with the routine that goes along with it. She added that she feels like she’s “earned” this period in her life, where she can enjoy her grandchildren, be available for her son if he needs her, and “finally relax a little.” Jeannette shared that she has always had a vision of her “golden years” to include lazy days on a front porch rocking chair, watching grandkids and sipping iced tea—unlike Miguel, who she claims is trying to “regain his long-lost youth.”Miguel responded to this by saying that he loves his wife very much and appreciates her vision of “old age,” but he doesn’t think he is “old” yet. He believes they are finally in a place where they can go where they want and do as they please, but Jeannette “never wants to do anything.” Miguel also shared that all of his children were a blessing, but being a parent was very hard and very draining, and he wants to have their time now. He wants to travel and to try things he has never tried before—like skydiving. Jeannette rolled her eyes at this and claimed that Miguel “just can’t accept getting old.”

    Cultural Profile:

    The family is Latinx. They are Seventh-Day Adventists; years ago they both held leadership positions in the church. After the tornado that destroyed their home and half of their town, they both retired from these roles. Miguel has also distanced himself somewhat from the church; Jeannette remains active and volunteers often.

    Family History:

    Both Miguel and his wife come from very large extended families, with many relatives who still live within an hour’s drive or so from them. Their children also remain close by: Gabby (F, 42 years) is married with two children (ages 15 and 10); Christina (F, 35 years) is married with three children (ages 10, 6, and 4); and Tommy (M, 29 years) is engaged. Tommy has Down syndrome and met his fiancée while living in a transitional adult community for individuals with Down syndrome. While Tommy does live independently, he still relies heavily on the support of his parents and siblings.

    Complete a 7- to 9-page paper with the following criteria:
    Choose four events from your life which you believe had a significant impact on your development. There must be at least one event from childhood, one from adolescence, and one from adulthood; the fourth event may be in any one of those three stages.
    For each of the life events selected, do the following:
    Describe the life event as age-graded, history-graded, or non-normative.Explain how it was significant to your development and why, including how it impacted or changed you cognitively, psychologically, and/or socially.Explain how each event and its associated changes influenced your identity development through your lifespan.Support your statements with developmental theory and integration of knowledge you gained throughout the course.     Remember this is not a narrative of your life, but rather an analysis of developmental influences using yourself as the case study.
