2828 unread replies.3131 replies.

Please read the Guidelines for the Organization Speech before doing this discussion. For this week’s discussion, you will brainstorm and come up with two topics for your upcoming second speech of the quarter: The Organization speech. Then, indicate how these topics would be of value to your peers or why you think it’s worth it for them to listen to.

In addition, you will need to reply to at least 2 of your classmates and indicate what you find interesting about their topic, as well as any suggestions to help them improve their topic (such as narrowing the focus or research for the topic).

Please read the Online Discussions- General Guidelines & Expectations to see the due date for the initial and final post and grading criteria.

Initial Post: (Due: Wednesday 11:59 p.m.)

I would like you to once again brainstorm 2 topics for your upcoming informative presentation. Please read the guidelines for the speech and consider the following three areas for the topic:

Self:  Your background knowledge and experience on the topic (i.e. credibility); What motivates you to talk about the subject?

Audience:  What do you think they already know about the topic?  Why do you feel this topic is relevant to them.

Scope:  Have you found credible research surrounding this topic?  What challenges do you foresee in narrowing this topic for the appropriate time-frame?

Final Post:  (Due: Friday 11:59 pm.)

In addition, please respond to at least 2 classmates and provide the following:

1 credible source related to their topic

How you think the source might be helpful

What part(s) of their proposed topic interest you

Note – While I may not be able to comment on everyone’s post in a given week, you will receive feedback from me in the course of the quarter. For grading criteria used for Discussions, click here.

Orgnization Speech:

Speech #2 Guidelines: Organization Speech

(Student Learning Outcomes 1, 3, & 4)

The primary purpose of informative speaking is to ensure an audience’s clear understanding of the ideas presented.  In this speech, you will be selecting a NON PROFIT ORGANIZATION organization (The Red Cross, Mothers Against Drunk Driving, and the Humane Society are a few examples) that you believe strongly in and inform your audience about it.  Again, your goal with this presentation is to inform us about your organization, not persuade (we’ll get to that later!), so while I am asking you to pick something to care about, be sure to reign in the desire to convince your audience to take an action.  The body of your presentation should cover the following:

Background information (the history of the organization; how it was formed; mission statement, etc.)

The purpose of the organization

Recent work the organization has done, or things done to advance the social cause it works for

Recent news (on the local, national, or global level) surrounding your topic.

To have a successful presentation, drawing upon the lessons from our previous presentations will help you. In addition, I’ll be looking for you to incorporate a variety of supporting materials, as well as outside research and evidence (Chapter 7 of the textbook; our course videos). I’ll also look for you to incorporate attention & interest factors through your language (Chapters 10 & 15). Additionally, where relevant, you may wish to incorporate a presentation aid (Chapter 13).

Think about it! We have talked about the benifits and bad about technology, but is there a right answer ? Audience: We all have experience and still do experience technology. But sometimes we get caught up in too much of technology as our phones, tv, computers, etc. that we waste time to better our skills in life or just drains our energy if we are not using technology for learning purpose. Scope: We have seen many death and accidents due to driving while texting! or even students not getting enough sleep to help there brains refresh for the next day! In these situation the problem is how do we limit our selves from technology when it could benefit our future?Topic #2: Do you prefer online or in person school learning?Self: Since pandemic has become a thing, switching to online for school has benefit me somewhat of time management, of having time to take care of school work and others things as sports and work as well. Although I feel sometimes that being in person learning actually helps us all to really learn concepts and feel in a good environment to benefit our learning.Audience: We have went through a year of online learning and now we are slowly going back to campus. We have experience both situations. This gives us an idea what learning situation was or is better ourselves. We all have different preference and that is OK! Thats the part of life, being different and original!Scope: I have came across news of footballs players who go through community college, having to take a year off or droping out to support there family since the pandemic. This topic can be hard to answer due to theres a pro and con to the topic. I have always been drawn to the water, which has probably played a part in what has brought me to live closer to the coast. We took those trips before 2000, and throughout my years I’ve witnessed the piles of garbage grow around public beaches all over the place, as well as see so much of our trash end up in oceans. More evidence for and tragic examples of ocean pollution are merely a google search away, I have seen countless videos and photos myself. micro plastics embedding themselves into the marine ecosystem, Audience: I’m sure most of us have seen the videos; the straw in the turtles nose, the islands of trash in the middle of the ocean, tarnished and dying corral reefs. Moreover, this continuing crisis adds directly to the global warming crisis. Our future generations lives are at stake if we do not find ways to better ourselves and become more responsible for our oceans.Scope: I have done similar research in the past, and I know there is a vast amount information around this topic. There are many examples for the same issue in different contexts. The challenge I can see is trying to pick a specific source of ocean pollution to address, as there are so many from plastic and trash, to chemicals, commercial fishing, etc.Topic 2: Single use plasticsSelf: Growing up in the 90’s single use plastics were so commonplace that I didn’t really give much thought to it until I started seeing the online campaigns in my teens. Today to still see the amount being used and improperly disposed of is saddening, and its impact is evident through environmental degradation and climate change. I hope to see a positive change in our habits as a nation with our addiction to single use plastics.Audience: Everyone is able to see the amounts of plastic littered around their town or city, on the sides of freeways, around waterways and oceans, all over the place. Single use plastics are a convenience but after the short intended use stays around for much longer, unintentionally, to contribute more to the degradation of our environment. Their production alone is detrimental to the planet and people.Scope: I have seen quite a few sources for credible research regarding this topic. A potential challenge with this is narrowing the topic down to a specific contributor for the issue, such as water bottles, or eating utensils, product packaging just as examples. Each would need its own set of solutions.
