Long Beach City College Sociology Analytical Journals

Analytical journals are more like your discussions and critical thinking analysis of the chapter(s). The majority of the journals will reflect selected chapters from the textbook. In addition, we will be viewing several documentaries throughout the semester in relation to our chapters and readings.  You must integrate the content from the reading you have chosen, (the chapter, and the documentary, if it applies).  You will be graded again on critical thinking, and sociological analysis. You will be responsible for 5 analytical journals. The journals should be at least two pages long. These are the guidelines for the journals:

  1. A question and answer. You must create a question from the reading that you answer. The question must involve critical thinking, dissecting, analyzing, examining, or explaining some aspect of the reading.  Must include sociological theory and or analysis. A single word, or one sentence answer won’t be enough.
  2. Discussion of at least one vocabulary word from the main text and discuss the relevance or significance. The mere definition will not be suffice.
  3. Personal immersion: This means using the Sociological Imagination- connect the reading to your personal life, family, community, peers, media, etc.  Be sure to state the reading, documentary, or multimedia activity to which you are responding.  You will be graded on effort and depth of personal reflection, but most importantly your ability to make sociological connections by applying the theories.

There are many wonderful “Cultural Diversity” and “Thinking Critically” boxes, throughout all the chapters. “The Rogue Sociologist”, “Dancing with the Dead”, and “Are we Prisoners of our Genes”  are just some examples. You may also elaborate on any theme within each chapter, and also utilize some of the videos that I link on our discussion for your journals. Lastly, I have provided a sample journal that I wrote, for your to review, and help you structure yours. Please find it on the “Files” section. The folder is titled “Sample Journal”. There is also a folder with Sociological Analysis Tables to help you apply the theories. Click here: Ch.1TheoreticalPersTable.doc
