The Creative Project Part 1: Gathering Information and Completing Outline

For the creative project, you will create a presentation where you are teaching a lesson to the class.

1. Choose an idea – You can discuss anything in the course that interests you. Choose a discipline (such as art, music, literature, rhetoric or writing, etc.).

2. Choose a historical period – Ancient Greece, Renaissance era, etc.

2. You can curate (gather) images from the museum project unit to use in your presentation. You may also use outside sources but you must cite everything that you use in MLA format.

The historical period you choose should be specific and rather short (you cannot choose “the history of humans” or “history since the year 100 CE”). And the humanities disciplines must both directly address the idea. (We were introduced to humanities disciplines in mocule 1). For example, if you were to choose “the divine right of kings,” you might compare the political writings of people like Algernon Sidney and John Locke and the religious writings of people like John Knox and John Milton. Or you might explore the divine right of kings through the artwork of the late 1600s and early 1700s. Other ideas might include political individualism, controversies over divine texts, evolution in philosophy and religion, the nature of “truth” in historical accounts, the rhetoric of nationalism, and how history is portrayed as linear or cyclical, the relationship or evolution of modernism and post modernism. Or any other idea that you’ve seen emerge from this class. Once you have chosen your “lesson.” You will teach what you have learned to your audience (me) in a presentation. You can use images from the virtual museum within your presentation. Your presentation must address these specific questions:

1.) What piece of art (painting, film, poem, story, etc) will you be focusing on? Which historical period does this artifact belong to? What are you going to say about it in relation to a philosophical idea from our class? For example, you could discuss John Berger’s idea of how humans interpret text and then using Berger’s ideas, analyze and explain your interpretation of Joyce Carol Oates “The Time Traveler” poem. This is just one possible idea.
