Virtue and the Good Life

After getting familiar somewhat with both Plato and Aristotle (and to some degree Socrates), what role do you think virtue plays for the good life? Is there any connection between being a good person and being happy? If so, what is that connection? If not, why should I try to be a good person/live a good life (if it does not render me happy)?
