CC Calling Child Protective Services What Are Your Concerns Discussion
As a teacher, the first time you need to call to report suspected child abuse can be very stressful. You often worry about the child, you worry that you may be mistaken, and you worry that the people you are reporting with find out that you called Child Protective Services.
Over a very long career, I’ve had to call to report four cases of suspected abuse of a child, and one time I had to report elder abuse. Every time I felt sad, uncomfortable and anxious, but I knew it was necessary.
It is very important that as a teacher you address your fears and focus on the fact that you are required by law to report any suspicion of abuse or neglect.
This week you have an opportunity to ask questions, share your experiences ( please do not mention names or schools where you may have had to report) but we can discuss incidents in a confidential way to help everyone learn.
- What, if anything, worries you about having to report suspected child abuse?
- If you have had to report, and are comfortable, please share how you remember feeling about making the call to Child Protective Services?
- Neglect is also a reportable situation. Are you comfortable you know how to identity neglect? Give us an example of neglect.
- Post anything else that may be on your mind about child abuse reporting.
These are two of my friends taking a look and writing a response for each one.
Hello everyone.
By my strong and daring nature, I won’t worry if I had to report a suspected child abuse because the safety of the child is above all else. Regardless of whether the child has been abused by the parents, the nanny, the nursery school…etc. I will not feel anxious, stressed or afraid if I report abuse because the child needs help because they are weak and do not have the strength to defend themselves.
My feeling would be that after I called Child Protection Services to report the abuse of a particular child by certain people, such as neighbours, in nurseries or through my work with children, and noticed on the child that there were places on his body with signs of beatings, I would feel happy with peace of mind and peace of conscience Relieved that I was able to help a small child who is being abused. Where the child’s life will change after the notification for the better because he will not be harmed and will be in safe hands or through continuous follow-up so that he will not be harmed again, as the child will not feel afraid and insecure. This will help him lead a normal and calm life.
There are several examples of child neglect by some people, such as poor parenting or neglect due to poverty, especially if the child lives with one person and cannot support him due to lack of income. Or drug abuse or poor skills in dealing and also the cruelty of dealing with some families that causes neglect of children. Neglect is also the failure to meet and provide the basic needs of the child in terms of physical, emotional, educational, medical … etc.
We should all always help children if we suspect child abuse because they need help because they are too young to defend themselves. We must also be brave and never worry when reporting a child being abused because this gives the child an opportunity for protection and continuous follow-up by child protection services.
Number 2
1. Something that worries me about having to report suspected child abuse is it would would be scary that a parent is doing that to their child. It would also be sad because it’s their child that they are abusing and when children get abused it hurts them inside like their emotions and as the children grow up they will get used to it and maybe abuse others. I think no child should go through abuse.
2.I have never had to report abuse because I have never been in that situation. But, if I was ever in that situation I wouldn’t hesitate to report it because children matter and they should go through that feeling ever and I recommend that if other people get put in that situation to report it as soon as possible. The reason to why I suggest that is because the sooner we repot it the faster that child gets to heal from the abuse and wouldn’t get used to it.
3. I Think I’m comfortable to identity neglect. An example of neglect is when the parents are not giving the child a safe place to live, like ignoring, insulting, threating with violence, e.t.c you can see that when the kid acts differently than others. Also a teacher or an adult can see those things by for example the kid being dirty, not having food, unwashed clothes, no special clothes for the seasons, scared, sad, e.t.c
