You will write a three to five-page (3-5) comparison and contrast essay. You may compare and contrast one of the following: writing style, theme, imagery, setting, character, message, etc. You will compare and contrast two of the following essays:

Anzaldúa, Gloria. “How to Tame a Wild Tongue.” 1987. https://www.everettsd.org/cms/lib07/WA01920133/Cen… ldua-Wild-Tongue.pdf

Baldwin, James. “A Talk to Teachers.” 1963. PDF.

Bell, Derrick. “Who’s Afraid of Critical Race Theory?” ” University of Illinois Law Review, vol. 1995, no. 4, 1995, p. 893-910. HeinOnline.

Rodriguez, Richard. “The Achievement of Desire.” The Hunger of Memory: The Education of Richard Rodriguez. David R. Godine, 1981.

To compare and contrast effectively, think about what you want the reader to understand about both texts. Consider the textual passages you will use from both works that will highlight something important. Don’t just repeat what we talked about in class. Now is the time to develop your own unique interpretation of the text based on careful analysis. Here are some questions to help you get started:

  1. What does the selected essay (“Essay A”) have in common with the other selected essay (“Essay B”)?
  2. Why is that similarity important?
  3. What passages will you use from Essay A and Essay B to explore the similarity?
  4. Within those passages, what are the differences?
