I’m working on a humanities discussion question and need support to help me study.

I watched Romeo & Juliet (1996) and the two scenes I chose to write about are the secret wedding between the 2 and them dying at the end of the movie. I think these are significant because they play 2 major parts in the movie that are really important to the characters themselves and the families. When they got married, they did it in secret because the families did not like each other so them marrying each other was out of the question. They were young and so in love, they wanted to be together so bad, the only way to be together was to get secretly married. The other scene that is so significant is them dying at the end. This is huge because it shows how much they really love each other. It shows that their love dies with each other in both the movie and play. Even though in the play she stabs herself to death and in the movie she shoots herself, they both show love and death one in the same. ONE RESPONSE TO THIS ONE!

I chose to write about the play “Taming of the Shrew”, and the movie “10 Things I Hate About You”. One scene that I noticed appeared in both was in the movie when Cameron first saw Bianca, he quoted the line from the play, “I burn, I pine, I parish”,(Shakespeare) which expresses his feelings of love at first sight. I feel the film portrayed this scene very well because of the way the music changed and motion slowed when he saw her and the camera focused in on his reactions made emphasized on how he was feeling. The film lets us see Bianca through Cameron’s point of view to focus in on how he views her. In the play, this same scene is when Lucentio sees Bianca, he says to Tranio, “I burn, I pine, I perish, Tranio, If I achieve not this young modest girl. Counsel me, Tranio, for I know thou canst; Assist me, Tranio, for I know thou wilt.” I feel he is also describing his love at first sight, and asking Tranio for help to marry her. I feel this is significant to the overall story because this is the entire plot of both the movie and play.

Another scene from the movie is when the girls’ father doesn’t allow Bianca to date until her older sister Kat dates, knowing Kat’s personality and that she has no interest in dating. I feel the film portrayed this scene well because he has established this rule and made it very clear. This scene can also be viewed as an example of exposition because it is laying out important story events and make up the character traits of the father, and characteristics of the relationship between the two sisters. In the play this same scene is displayed when Baptista says “Gentlemen, importune me no farther, For how I firmly am resolved you know That is, not to bestow my youngest daughter Before I have a husband for the elder. If either of you both love Katherina, Because I know you well and love you well Leave shall you have to court her at your pleasure.” (Shakespeare) He is saying that his younger daughter cannot marry until the older daughter marries. This scene is significant to the overall story because again, this makes up the entire plot.

I feel the play was adapted to the contemporary world through the movie in which the father’s relationship he had with his daughters, and being an over protective parent. The love at first sight was portrayed through young high schoolers falling in love. The film has had so many adaptations from the play to give 90’s kids something to relate to. Young love and overbearing parents are things a lot of people experience. AND ONE RESPONSE TO THIS ONE!
