Existing Data Designs: Archival Research, Content Analysis, and Meta-Analysis 

There may be instances where research data already exists. In such cases, circumstances for access of such data and how it might be utilized within a given study (such as for the study’s focus and analysis) are dependent upon several factors, such as ease of access, relevance, and scope of the study’s focus (Privitera, 2017). Existing data may be in the form of archived records, established research studies, documents, and transcriptions. The question to ask in approaching their use is whether they will effectively assist in meeting the research need. For example, if a researcher finds literature revealing a need to explore issues of reflexivity in qualitative studies on race-based studies, then the need is clearly present to access existing data; in this case, he or she might build an existing data design, such as archival research design, accessing peer-reviewed, qualitative studies on the topic. The goal is to ensure that no matter what form of existing design is necessary for response to the research problem, the steps involved, like with any research method, require care and consideration of the data’s use. Researchers may consider that existing data designs are easier than conducting experimental or another form of non-experimental design; however, there may be significant challenges inherent to access, use as well as to processes that must be followed just as with other methods (Privitera, 2017).

This week, you will examine and evaluate the foundation of existing data designs and analyses. Specifically, you will review archival research, content analysis, and meta-analysis with a particular focus on how each is utilized in research development and design.

In the corresponding section, provide the name(s) of the method you reviewed, its primary use and when it should be used, strengths and limitations of the method, ethical considerations, and one example of when the method could be used (include your interests or something more general).

Pt 2:

For this assignment, prepare a brief paper to address the following: 

  • Explain two types of records used for existing data designs.
  • Provide examples concerning how archival research data design, content analysis, and meta-analysis might be used for a study (of each, not necessarily together).
  • Evaluate the common uses of existing data designs (examples). Explain any issues with how results may be used. Provide examples to support your findings. 

Support your assignment with at least one scholarly resource. In addition to these specified resources, other appropriate scholarly resources, including seminal articles, may be included.

Length: 1-2 pages, not including title and reference pages

Your assignment should demonstrate thoughtful consideration of the ideas and concepts presented in the course by providing new thoughts and insights relating directly to this topic. Your response should reflect scholarly writing and current APA standards.

  • Explain the research situation(s) that may require you to use an existing data design. Determine if the criteria are the same for each kind of design (be sure to give examples/be specific).
  • Examine the limitations and benefits learned about using archival research, content analysis, and meta-analysis.
  • Analyze any ethical considerations with implementing these methods.
  • Reflect on your experience with reviewing and applying thematic analysis.
  • Include any questions you may have for your professor.
