Foundations of Professional Ethics for Accountant Discussion

Discuss Chapter 1 – Foundations of Professional Ethics for Accountant

For this week’s discussion you will create an ethical dilemma and then reply to the dilemma posted by a classmate.

By Wednesday, create a scenario with an ethical dilemma.  You can use the cases in chapter 1 as examples, but try to be original.

By Sunday, reply to a classmate and evaluate their scenario.  In these discussions or any others, if you are replying to a classmate, or the instructor, cite the classmate’s or instructor’s name in the reply.  Use at least two of the ethical principles from chapter 1.  Explain the outcome from following each principle.  Are the outcomes different or the same?

Good evening class,

Ms. Smith owns ABC Dental, a dental office right down the street from her competitor Ms. Rose. Ms. Smith’s business has been struggling for the past months since her office space is a little outdated and customers have continuously complained about the poorly maintained and cleaned dental equipment. Ms. Rose on the other hand, has been attracting the majority of clients with her clean, modern-looking office, and of course her office’s known reputation for excellent customer service.

Ms. Smith, feeling desperate for business, calls a meeting and asks all her employees to start handing out gift cards to friends, family, or anyone passing by in exchange for a 5-star review of her dental office on multiple online platforms. Ms. Smith, super motivated, even throws in an incentive to give a hefty gift card to the employee that collects the most reviews.

Ms. Smith’s actions result in a surge of many false online reviews, misleading customers into her dental office.

Can we justify Ms. Smith’s actions to save her business?

You left your company but needed to follow up with a few clients before completely cutting ties. You find out that another employee of that company has been asked by a client to leave and come work for them full time. That employee took another two clients with her and was promised, if the company sues, they would pay for all legal fees.

What do you do? Since you are no longer an employee of that original company do you tell them? Or do you just move on?
