about this assignment introduction = Odysseus is an interesting hero because he exemplifies the trickster hero. Trickster heroes may also be strong and brave – although not necessarily – but they generally win by using cleverness, intelligence, and some degree of deceit. While this deceit may make some of their actions seem morally problematic, they are nevertheless still heroic and the story will usually justify their actions in some way. In ancient Greek literature, Odysseus is recognized as a hero while also often being at odds with the more conventional heroes who are irritated by his strategies. The most famous example of Odysseus’s trickery is the Trojan Horse.

To give you a little background for the sections of the Odyssey we’re reading: the basic plot is how Odysseus gets home after fighting in the Trojan War, and how he reclaims his throne in Ithaca. In the legends, the Trojan War lasted for 10 years, and then it takes 10 years for Odysseus to return (mostly because the god Poseidon hates him and also because a goddess and a sorceress fall in love with him). Finally, Odysseus washes up on the shore of a friendly island whose king gives him hospitality and a way home, and in thanks, Odysseus tells the story of his long wanderings. (So, Books 9 and 10 are part of this story Odysseus tells.) When he arrives in Ithaca, he disguises himself because the palace is occupied by over a hundred men who are insisting that Penelope, Odysseus’s wife, marry one of them. Odysseus has to defeat them all with only the help of his son Telemachus (who was a baby when Odysseus left) and two loyal servants.
