The University of Montana Feminist Oppression Essay

  • Identify some central problem of feminism that you think our authors cover. (This may be the obvious topics of “oppression” or “gender” but it could also be “intersectionality” or other theme that matters to you that you can connect with the readings we’ve done.)
  • Take at least three of our authors and identify the ways they attempt to advance some solution to the problem, highlight the problem in an edifying way, or otherwise move the discussion of feminism forward. (Or, you could argue that they move the discussion of feminism backward.) Be sure to explain this fully.
  • Consider points of commonality and/or difference in their approaches, providing your own critical analysis on the question you have identified and brought out in these authors’ arguments.

For example, a straightforward approach to this task would be to focus on oppression, which is a huge issue for feminism from its beginnings until now.  Why does oppression matter so much to feminists?  Discuss the three authors we read on oppression (Frye, Young, and Bartky) showing how they advance our understanding of oppression or seek to overcome oppression.  Another approach would be to consider what “gender” means.  Consider three of the four authors we read on gender (Lloyd, Antony, Butler, and Haslanger) and perhaps show how their works build on each other, refine each other, criticize each other.  Part of doing this will be first showing that you’re clear on what question they’re asking—and why it matters.  Part of this will be showing what the authors’ arguments are.  Part of it will be drawing comparisons between their works and developing your arguments for these comparisons.  At some point along the way, you will need to address your own view on the question you choose and provide your own sense of how the question should be answered.   double spaced with 1 inch margins (this makes it much easier for me to read and comment).
