ACC Beginning of The Universe Life and Humanity Discussion

I’m working on a literature discussion question and need support to help me study.

What similarities do you see between Ovid’s creation story and those we read for week 1?  How does he reshape these earlier myths?  What do you think of his writing style?

Reading for the Discussion Board provided below and in files.

When I read Ovid’s creation story, the first creation myth that came to mind was Genesis. This is why I will be comparing these two according to my perspective as a reader. As indicated by Ovid, the creation is a consummation of conflict between intrinsically fighting contrary energies, corresponding to the Chaos of Genesis. This basic difficulty describes the Western idea, and one is less inclined to see this natural shakiness in the creation legends of different societies. Indeed, Ovid’s record on this score is more “logical” than Genesis and adept to sound more natural to us. The distinction in viewpoints among Ovid and the author(s) of Genesis most pronouncedly remembers the accentuation for the creator.

Ovid was able to create ideal lines of verse like it is no one’s business; simultaneously, he has a wide jargon, a splendid feeling of illustration, and huge learning – which he doesn’t hesitate to show off.
