University College Dublin Retail Company Data Management Plan Report

The goal of this project is to develop a data management plan (DMP) for either a research project or another client organisation, to be provided to the client for implementation.  You may otherwise solicit your own client (e.g., a current or previous employer, a personal project, an organisation you are familiar with, a company, etc)

If you choose the research data management plan option: You will interview a researcher (PI, principal investigator, or whomever is running the project) about their research plans, specifically probing to discover their data management needs. You will use what you learn from the PI to develop a funder-compliant data management plan that is compliant with the funder if there is funding. If the funder does not currently require a data management plan, ensure that the plans you develop adhere to the best practices in the PI’s field of practice.

In addition to an implementation-ready data management plan, you must prepare a “budget advisory” document and a timeline for implementation tasks. The budget advisory document must include an itemised list of all expected expenses for supporting the data management plan, including (but not limited to) the staff time, tools and infrastructure, licenses, and any other related fees. Note that you will not need to include specific Euro figures (although estimates are fine), but will need to specify every item that must be budgeted in order to fully support the data management plan as specified. The timeline of implementation tasks must illustrate when key tasks must be completed to fully support the data management plan as specified.

Your final project will include (I expect it will be about 12 pages + appendices)

  • Analysis of the client and the project/organisation
  • Your method/tools for getting requirements and your analysis of the client’s needs
  • The tools you use for generating a data management plan and how you used them
  • Your actual plan and recommendations
  • Budget/timeline
  • APA Bibliography

Service Evaluation Plan Using RISE

If you choose the service evaluation plan option:  Using the RISE framework, evaluate the institution you are working for to assess its current state of support for research data management. Using the RISE framework, your task is to set the scope/context, classify current support, design future services, and create a report and recommendations. You should interview as many stakeholders as possible to get a collaborative picture of RDM situation at your institution/organisation. You should interview at least one individual from two of the following groups: researchers, IT support, librarians, research officers. If you are working in one of these roles you can self-interview.

The key component of RISE is benchmarking: Collaborative Assessment of Research Data Infrastructure and Objectives (CARDIO). Although it is focused on the UK, you can use the CARDIO RDM Matrix to select 1 from each group to evaluate in your organisation and to structure your conversations with staff: https://www.dcc.ac.uk/sites/default/files/documents/events/EPSRC-workshop/CARDIO_matrix_EPSRC.pdf
