Step One – Define the Topic & Purpose: For your Informative Presentation, use Chapter 5 in The Art of Public Speaking to help you brainstorm topics you already have personal knowledge and experience with – a familiar topic you know a lot about. Your general purpose is to inform, so use pp. 82-92 to help you determine your specific purpose and your central idea. Label your topic, general purpose (to inform), specific purpose, and central idea as “Step One.”

Step Two – Create the Outline: Once you’ve completed Step One, develop your Informative Presentation Outline as Step Two. Remember that an outline is different from an essay. An outline uses bullet points and phrases versus complete sentences. Your outline should contain the following elements clearly labeled:

• Introduction with attention-getter/hook and central idea
• Body with three main points (use Chapter 9 in The Art of Public Speaking)
