CMC Immigration and Discrimination Discussion
“It’s a hard line when you’re an import
Baby boy, it’s hard times
When you ain’t sent for
Racists feed the belly of the beast
With they pitchforks, rich chores
Done by the people that get ignored
Ya se armó
Ya se despertaron
It’s a whole awakening
La alarma ya sonó hace rato
Los que quieren buscan
Pero nos apodan como vagos
We are the same ones
Hustling on every level
Ten los datos
Walk a mile in our shoes
Abróchense los zapatos
I been scoping ya dudes, ya’ll ain’t been working like I do
I’ll outwork you, it hurts you
You claim I’m stealing jobs though
Peter Piper claimed he picked them, he just underpaid Pablo
But there ain’t a paper trail when you living in the shadows
We’re America’s ghost writers, the credit’s only borrowed
It’s a matter of time before the checks all come
But
Immigrants, we get the job done
Look how far I come
Look how far I come
Look how far I come
We get the job done
Look how far I come
Look how far I come
Look how far I come
Immigrants, we get the job” “Immigrants We Get the Job Done” (Residente, Snow Tha Product, Riz Ahmed, K’naan, Lin-Manuel Miranda, 2016)

RESPONSE PROMPT
The genius of our country is born from the rich cultural contributions of all immigrants. All of us (unless we were indigenous to this land and are Native American, or, forcibly brought here because of enslavement) are immigrants or children of immigrants. You feel pride for your ethnic heritage and want to share with your child (if you need to – pretend to go into the future:) the valuable cultural traditions that you have been taught about your ancestral heritage. But, today, your child comes home from school upset. She shares with you a story about a Latina girl in class who was told by the class bully to “go back home where you came from and tell your mom and dad to quit taking all of our American jobs!” Horrified, you wonder how this kind of hateful racist rhetoric has trickled down to the playground of childhood. Isn’t childhood suppose to be innocent? Your daughter wants to know why this happened too and where is the little Latina girl suppose to go to? Where is her home? Your daughter remembers playing at her home several times before and is confused. Isn’t that her home? Doesn’t she live just around the corner in that pretty green house? You seize the opportunity to open up your daughter’s eyes to the rich beauty of immigrants and, in particular, the Latinx heritage. You offer to read to her entire class four beautiful books to highlight both the contributions and the courage of the Latinx immigrants who are the true touchstones of the American Dream. (October is National Hispanic Awareness Month after all:).) And you are more than ready to make these children aware! You especially hope that the bombastic bully becomes aware and is listening with a new mind and heart.
