Read this New York Times article  (Links to an external site.)that talks about the Israel Museum in Jerusalem. They recently had an exhibition in which they made the case that Ancient Egyptian hieroglyphics are similar to modern emojis, and that it could be the key to understanding the writing system of the Ancient Egyptians—that it’s really a series of emoji-like codes. But there are some major differences that relate to syntax, morphology, and semantics—elements that emoji-heavy messages don’t usually encapsulate. There are many who believe that emoji could evolve into how we actually communicate online—thereby evolving to have a morphology, syntax, and semantics of its own, and something that could be used as a universal language.
