Vertical integration is part of the strategic operations of the healthcare organization.  An organization that is vertically integrated owns multiple part of their supply chain and controls the commodities, manufacturing, distribution and retail portions of the market. In health care we see this as integrated healthcare delivery systems where a managed care organization (MCO) or Accountable Care Organization (ACO)  provides acute patient care, multispecialty medical care delivery system, is capable of contracting for various needed patient services and a payer.
