EN 100 The Negative Effects of the Cell Phone Discussion

Directions: You will write a cause and effect essay of two to three pages on one of the following topics. Carefully select one of the topics and think through your ideas. Discuss your topic with classmates, friends or relatives to get as many ideas as you can. Read the question carefully; answer the question that is asked, not the question you think was asked!

Do not simply jump at your first ideas; instead, try to think of both immediate and remote causes or effects. You may want to think of as many as five or six causes or effects and then select your best three. Be sure to read the cause/effect discussion before selecting a topic and writing your essay. Your text is also helpful.

Then carefully organize your ideas, perhaps from least important to most important, or most obvious to least obvious, or perhaps the first cause then causes the next cause, or… Your paper will be judged for many things, but the sophistication of its thought, including its organization, will be a major factor in your grade. You must think beyond the obvious.

1. Explain why a particular movie or television show is or was popular. Be sure to write about ONE show and to be specific.

2. Explain why ONE of the following is or has been popular: soap operas, romance novels, rap music, or reality television. You may want to write about the topic in general or to pick a particular soap opera, romance novel author, musician, or reality television show. The idea here is that many people cannot understand why anyone would like these things.

3. Discuss the negative effects of ONE of the following technological advancements: the microwave oven, the light bulb, the air conditioner, or the cell phone. You may choose some other form of technology but not the automobile, which is discussed at length in the discussion. Be sure to think of both immediate and remote effects.

4. Why do some students fail out of school? It isn’t simply the difficulty of the subjects. That would be an immediate cause; there are more remote causes.

5. What effects has someone important in your life had on you? (coach, teacher, parent, other relative, friend) This topic is more personal than the others, but try to treat it as logically and complexly as the other topics would demand.

6. Choose any ONE of the topics found in the link below.
