I’m working on a writing discussion question and need an explanation and answer to help me learn.

Use this simulation (Links to an external site.) to address the following questions. Follow the instructions provided underneath the simulation. Make sure to read the Hints and Background information as well.

Momentum: p = mv (where m = mass and v = velocity)

Run the simulation using the default settings (don’t change anything). Try to get all 6 bars correct without looking at the answer. Try as many times as you need to get the 6 bars correct on your own. Remember, momentum is a vector quantity and is based on the direction of the velocity of the object.

The Initial Post

Using your own words explain what the green, orange, and purple bars are informing you about the collision for each cart once you have all 6 bars correct. Explain the relationship of the bars between cart 1 and cart 2 before and after the collision as compared to the system bars. Make sure you are discussing momentum. Discuss what is happening BEFORE the collision and what is happening AFTER the collision.

In your reply post is it possible to have an elastic collision if both carts are traveling to the right? Explain your answer. Provide details about the masses and velocities of each cart and relate all of this to momentum in your explanation.
