SDMC Wk 15 Help Homeless People Drug Abuse & Mental Illness Discussions

 

Part of Child, Family and Community is to understand and have knowledge of organizations that can help people in the community. List 3 organizations for each problem : help homeless people, Drug abuse, not enough food to fed the family, alcohol abuse and mental illness. Write a sentence on each organization. (more than 5 sentences, preferably one page)

1)1. The Salvation Army has been one of the big organizations that is widely known to help homeless people and is also a church too. They were founded on July 2nd, 1865 in London. The founders are William Booth and Catherine Booth. Salvation Army helps families with all the issue that you want us to cover. They are very popular and help families all year long and during Christmas time they help families that are homeless or low income as well.

2. When it comes to alcohol abuse the first organizations that I could find that would be good for families that helps with teens is MADD- Mothers Against Drunk Drivers. In 1980 their organization started around a kitchen table, during that year there on the road way then in war. Since that organization they cut down the deaths due to drunk driving. They have a crisis hotline that is available 24/7. Their main focus is Zero Deaths, Zero Families impacted by impaired drivers.

3. There is a bunch of Food Banks around the county that can offer families food that don’t have funds to pay for groceries for the family. There is San Diego Food Bank. The food bank has a lot of people who donate to them and a couple that donate to them are; USDA, Growers, wholesalers and local run food drives. The second places families can go too is WIC- Women Infant, children. They help pregnant women and children up to the age five years old. They are very friendly and help with breast-feeding they offer classes as well. You also get now a card that allows you to get fresh fruit and vegetables and milk and bread and cheese for a month for your family. I know as a single parent I have wic and its a good program that helps me when I am really struggling with money. If you are in California they have a program thats called firstfiveCalifornia, where you can get a lot of information to help families.

4. Narcotics Anonymous- Na is one places someone can reach out too and look for a meeting to help with drug problems. Going on their website they have a lot of places to find meetings in your area and all around San Diego. You can go to a meeting and talk about what you are dealing with or you can just sit and listen to peoples stories that they are going through. They also have Sponsors that are there for you to help you as well.

5. The National Alliance on Mental IIIness of San Diego they are also part of NAM California as well. It was founded in 1970 by family members who struggled with Mental Illness. There headquarters is in Arlington Virginia. They have programs to help families with members that deal with mental illness. They have some programs that they are known for which are –

3) “The purpose of rehabilitative agencies is to enable or restore an individual’s capacity to participate effectively in the community by correcting behavior, addressing mental health, and/or providing needed services to those who have recently immigrated to this country as well as to those who have a disability” (Berns 395). Here are some agencies that help our community:

Homeless People:

  • U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD)- They provide homeless shelters and emergency housing in the San Diego area. People can call 2-1-1 or (858) 300-1211 or or contact ResourceCenter@211sandiego.org to get housing help.
  • San Diego Housing Commission: They provide homelessness prevention that helps families at risk of homelessness to remain permanently housed and Diversion which assists newly homeless families to identify alternative permanent housing or necessary support to stay out of the shelter system.
  • Father Joe’s Villages: They provide housing to over 2,000 men, women, children, seniors and people with disabilities each night by their housing programs.

Drug Abuse:

  • San Diego Treatment and Recovery Center- They offer an Outpatient program where you can begin or maintain your recovery while you continue working, attend school or care for your children.
  • Hope Canyon Recovery- They provide a personalized treatment plan,using evidence-based treatment approaches to identify the causes of addiction and address them.
  • FreeRehabCenters.org- They provide a complete list of free, low cost, sliding scale, and low income assisted rehab facilities on the Internet that provide alcohol, drug, and other assistance with substance abuse rehabilitation.

Feed the Family:

  • Feeding San Diego- They are the leading hunger-relief and food rescue organization in San Diego County. They rescue surplus food before it goes to waste and provides more than 32 million meals a year to people facing hunger.
  • San Diego Food Bank: Last year, the Food Bank distributed 28 million pounds of food, and the Food Bank serves, on average, 350,000 people per month in San Diego County.
  • San Diego Hunger Coalition- They lead coordinated action to end hunger in San Diego County supported by research, education, and advocacy. Their vision is that everyone in San Diego County has enough food for an active, healthy life.

Alcohol Abuse:

  • National Council on Alcoholism and Drug Dependence, Inc. (NCADD)-This is an organization dedicated to helping those who are in the middle of trying to overcome an alcohol use disorder or other substance abuse problem. They offer access to information as well as connections to local resources where they can get the in-person treatment necessary to overcome alcohol use and addiction
  • Alcoholics Anonymous (Links to an external site.) (AA)- This is an international organization that provides alcoholics in recovery with a safe place to meet, share, and work toward building a stronger life together without alcohol
  • Al-Anon and Alateen-This is for family members and friends of alcoholics and are great resources for learning how to cope with someone’s drinking behavior. Individuals can attend meetings in person, online or via the phone to discuss the situations they are currently facing. Members advise one another on how to support and encourage a loved one to seek the treatment they need.

Mental Illness:

  • Behavioral Health Services- They run the San Diego Access & Crisis Line (ACL) which is confidential and free of charge and offers immediate support and resources from an experienced counselor 24 hours a day, 7 days a week on all behavioral health topics including: suicide prevention, crisis intervention, community resources, mental health referrals, alcohol and drug support services and more.
  • Mental Health America: They are committed to promote mental health as a critical part of overall wellness, including prevention services for all; early identification and intervention for those at risk; integrated care, services, and support for those who need them; with recovery as the goal.
  • It’s Up to US: They raise awareness, educate the community and provide easy access to local organizations and services, and their goal is to initiate change in perception, inspire wellness and reduce the stigma surrounding mental health challenges.
