Analyzing Limitations to Healthcare and their Effects

The US healthcare system is full of disparities affecting people of color and other
marginalized groups disproportionately. These disparities lead to shortcomings in the coverage
of health insurance, unequal access to services, and fewer outcomes for specific groups. These
problems affect African Americans disproportionately. Barriers such as perceived
discrimination, mistrust in medical care, race discordance, and poor communication have seen
African-Americans face many challenges in terms of health care (Cuevas & Saha, 2016). The
growth of morbidity and mortality rates has not changed the mistrust in medical care since CULTURAL ASSESSMENT: AFRICAN AMERICANS 5
African Americans are less likely to stick to medication or even use the same health care
services. Underutilization of health care services contributed by socioeconomic and access to
care has also been one of the challenges African Americans face. Race and ethnic disparities
have been the persistent problems among African Americans, which has can be seen through the
low life expectancy rates. These challenges have increased the prevalence rates for diabetes,
hypertension, and heart-related diseases, which sum up to chronic diseases (Pullins et al., 2018).
Therefore, to change these challenges, the health care services have had to increase the quality of
health care among ethnic minorities to prevent low health outcomes.
