I chose Ireland because it is a conflict that has been going on for a very long time. While Ireland and the United Kingdom are at peace, there are still some IRA factions that conduct terrorist actions in Northern Ireland. The Irish had been ruled by the United Kingdom as an unequal partner in the kingdom. The English conquest of Ireland took place in the 1500’s through the 1600’s and ruled until the Irish war of independence which began shortly after World War I. The British had the capability to suppress the Irish but the British public had no desire for war after just coming out of the first world war. The British retained the Protestant north while the catholic south became the republic. There was relative peace until the troubles began in 1968 and continued until the late 1990’s. The IRA still seeks to unify Ireland while the British still retrain full control of Northern Ireland. There’s still been a small faction in the Irish government that seeks to unify the North with the Republic.

I feel militarism is not making the world a safer place. American military intervention in recent years is against the very founding principles of this nation. What happened to the belief in national self determination? American soldiers should not be sent to die in unjustifiable wars meaning, Americans should not be sent to fight in wars if they are not actually protecting the United States itself. America found itself having to fill the gap for Western Democracies after the British and French empires were severely weakened after the second world war. “A powerful motivator for external military intervention is protecting or enhancing foreign interest.” (Fedorak, S. 2014) The United States has maintained interest in the middle east for sometime. The recent disastrous and very mishandled withdrawal from Afghanistan seemed to mark the end of the era but this is far from the truth. American troops are still being sent to middle eastern countries to protect American interests in the region. This only causes more radical Islamic attacks in Western countries and against Western military forces in those countries.

Investigate whether your community has any programs to feed the needy. How can you, as a global citizen, assist in ensuring food security for the needy in your community, or in the global community?
I chose my hometown to discuss because I was once a part of this organization that helped with the needy. The organization is currently not active at this time, but there are members who still meet up at the location to give out food to those in need. We would take up donations from local businesses and sometimes donate food ourselves to make sure the community had food. There is also a local food business that goes to our local park and set up free food trucks for the community as a whole to come together and support one another. Department of Human Services serves Commodities to the communities as well. I could assist my community by becoming an advocate for those who don’t know about the program or assist with driving to those who are unable to come to us. I could do more volunteering with my time by going and doing more work to provide the commodities.
Put yourself in the shoes of a new immigrant. You have moved to a foreign country, are unable to speak the language, and must find a place to live, a job, and necessities, such as food and water, with a limited supply of money. Outline your strategy for surviving, then becoming comfortable in your new surroundings. What assistance would you welcome from the locals?
I would start by trying to adapt to the country by trying to learn their language to start with. I would also compare the things that I’ve used in my country and compare it to what they have and what I could substitute for what they don’t have. I would be open to trying new things and not be so quick to judge because of what they do and don’t have. I would welcome housing assistance and suggestions on the best neighborhoods to possibly live in. I would also allow the assistance of education for my child as well and seek help when needed for him as well to learn the language. Overall I would welcome the move with open arms and try my hardest to quickly adapt to change instead making the worst out of the situation.

If I were to put myself in the shoes of a new immigrant living in a foreign country trying to survive, it would be very difficult and I cant imagine what it would feel like. If I new that I would be moving to a country, I would at least try to learn some of the language in advance. If I had no time in advance to learn the language, then the first few weeks I would focus on learning key everyday language. I would then go about applying for or finding a job. I would work up to two jobs to get the funds for an apartment or a small home. I think one of the most important things to do in this situation would be to get to know as many people you can because the more people you know, the more opportunities you have. I would appreciate help with language, direction, and hospitality from locals that I would meet along the way.
To answer the question, “is militarism making the world a safer place?” I would have to say yes and no. I would say yes because military can be used against governments that are tyrannical, and can help prevent or stop mass genocide and other wrong doings of corrupt governments. I also believe that having military power will prevent conflict because of fear, In the textbook it says, “conflicts between countries have decreased over the past 60 years” (Fedorak, 2014, 175) the reason being not wanting to cause war. I would say yes though because war and military force is very dangerous for people that live in proximity to conflictual areas. In the textbook it says, “Civilians are the main casualties of war – as many as 90 per cent of deaths in a given conflict area are civilians.” (Fedorak, 2014, 173) This is obviously not peaceful and is a shame that many civilians pay the price for conflicts among countries,

My community does have programs to help feed the needy or the less fortunate and I have personal experience serving in them. It is a program called Meals By Grace and is often run in local churches. I have helped make, pack and deliver food multiple times. It is a truly eye opening experience, to see someone from your own school who lives down the street unable to nourish themselves is a crazy thing. Being able to help them is amazing and so heartwarming. You can help in many different ways. All you need to do is look up ways to help and organizations all over have opportunities. It could be as little as donating a can of food or as much as running your own food bank it all up to you and in the end you will feel better knowing you helped.

I would stick with the group of immigrants and try to find an area of town that is predominantly my native ethnicity. From there I would try to find someone I could trust and rent out a room or even a couch. Try to find a job that does not require English, then begin learning English when I have a steady income. Once I learn english I will begin my hunt for a higher pay job and begin saving to get my own house/ appt. Then begin to work on my education and become a specialist of some sort in order to make a great living and have the opportunity to start a family and give them a better life than the one I worked so hard to achieve.

More than a third of child deaths are linked to malnutrition. Nutrition is an excellent investment — it empowers people and communities. In so doing, nutrition fuels the development process and leads to poverty reduction.” lower economic growth and worse quality of life, includ-ing lower food supply, higher infant mortality, Higher inequality, higher pollution, and Re-duced Access to Clean water, Doctors, and education (129). As global citizens, we need to be aware of the world hunger issues, because it is still happening in the world. In the past, two years, Covid-19 has been an issue for every country in the world, which seriously affected the food situation, especially in some developing countries. Millions of people have lost their income over the past year as food production has slowed and food prices have risen, the government faces serval issues with agriculture. Although we may not realize that food security is an issue for us, there are millions of people who struggle with food and daily living. Once we are aware of the problem of food security, the communities need to work together to reduce the wastes of food for meals of the day. As the community bonds together of the importance of food, the community should Assist poor households at risk to prevent and reduce malnutrition among children, pregnant and lactating women, and the elderly and to promote healthy eating habits. The global community can work with private food suppliers to bring food to areas of the city with few commercial outlets (food deserts) and regulate the price and quality of food. Each country can increase food production and supply by providing technical and financial incentives to small producers, building links between rural producers and urban consumers, and promoting community gardens and other forms of urban agriculture (134).
In my opinion, moving to a foreign country is a difficult thing in general. The textbook mentioned the problems such as language, a place to live, a job, or even basic living necessities. If I was a new immigrant to a foreign country and unable to speak the language, I would try to make connections with people who may have similar backgrounds, who are also foreign. The immigrants who are in the community for years can be first-hand help for me when moving to another country, especially those who came from the same country as me or speak the same language. I think that language is the biggest problem when moving to a foreign country. It is important to make friends in a foreign country or community because they are usually the best way for you to become part of the community. Community composes with people, in order to be part of the community in a foreign country. making friends can be the best way with people who share similar backgrounds, because “adopting the host country’s practices and norms (156)” would be the best way to break the loneness and become part of the community.
