Hidden Figures by Margot Lee Shetterly Analytical Review

For our S & R #5, we will build on the skills we learned for our S & R #1-3 for Dweck, Colvin, and Davis, as well as our S & R #4 for Shetterly. Since we are summarizing an important scene demonstrating key success factors for Mary Jackson or Christine Darden in Margot Lee Shetterly’s, Hidden Figures, which is a historical biography, our language will sound different from S & R #1-3, which were summaries for academic articles. Be sure to review the attached directions for our S & R #4 Pg 1-2 carefully, and use the Writing Frame Pg 3-5 to help organize your ideas. For our S & R #5 we will:

  • Write a summary of an important scene demonstrating key success factors for Mary Jackson or Christine Darden in Hidden Figures from the Ch. 10 through Ch. 17.
  • Choose details and example quotes from the same scene on the same page, such as the page 114-115 discussion of the kind of deliberate practice Mary Jackson had developed in math which helped her to excel at work, opening the door to her career as a respected NASA engineer, or the page 155 discussion of Christine Darden, who as a child was fascinated with the mechanical workings of her bicycle and other toys, taking them apart to see how they were constructed, fixing them, and putting them back together, creating the kind of deliberate practice which later made her an excellent NASA engineer.
  • Be sure to review our Week 6 Module Quote Sandwich Handout. Then, in order to write an effective summary of this important scene, include the main idea for the whole book in thefirst intro. sentence, followed by 2 quote sandwiches describing a pivotal success factor scenefor Mary Jackson or Christine Darden. Provide clear points and quote context in your own words, support quotes with signal phrases and correct MLA citations, as well as quote commentary in your own words, ending with a wrap up sentence for smooth summary finish. Make sure the quotes are from the same page (within a page or two is o.k. as long as this is developing the same point about a specific mentor, or a scene demonstrating growth mindset,or deliberate practice).
  • For our response paragraph, be sure to review our Week 4 Module Logos, Pathos, Ethos Videoand Rhetorical Appeals Handout. Then write a clear response which involves a rhetorical analysis of the types of appeals Shetterly uses to make her writing effective, including logos, pathos, and/or ethos. Be sure to choose your details and examples from the second section of her book, Ch. 10 to Ch. 17. Include 2 quote sandwiches demonstrating her effective use oflogos, pathos, and/or ethos, each with a point, quote context, support quote, and quote commentary, as well as a wrap up sentence.
