Oakton Community College Euripides Medea Discussion

I’m working on a humanities discussion question and need an explanation and answer to help me learn.

Read Medea and the one that is Translated by Robin Robertson and answer the discussion post in your own words. Write a paragraph 6-8 sentences minimum. Make sure to address all the questions asked below in the paragraph.

In Euripides’ tragic play, Medea comes on stage with the Nurse (her children’s Nurse) and delivers a long and passionate speech to the “Women of Corinth,” the group of women who make up the “Chorus.” This particular speech is a powerful expression of Medea’s emotional suffering now that her husband, Jason, has left her to marry the young Corinthian princess. Medea’s conversation with the Chorus explores subject matters that are of great concern for the speaker:

It is hardest for foreigners like me to be accepted

–always working, always trying to fit in –

so I have no time for those who think themselves

above the rules, or better than the others. (lines 222-225)

I am alone in Corinth, an outsider

In a strange city far from my family –

My only company a husband

who took me as a plunder from some foreign campaign

and now dishonours me. I have no mother, no brother,

no kin to turn to, to shelter me from shame. (lines 256-261)

What is Medea so concerned about here? What do we learn about Medea’s experience of her life in Corinth with Jason? How does this situation impact the decisions that Medea is making now that Jason has left her to marry the Corinthian princess?
