Social Science Stonewall Riot Discussion Paper

Political protest has become more visible and politically salient in public and private life in the US in the past decade, thanks in no small part to our voracious consumption of news media. While older people tend to be the primary viewers of 24-hour cable news networks like CNN or Fox News, younger people are following citizen journalists and activists who use digital platforms like Twitter, Facebook, and Instagram to provide what tend to be more visceral, personal presentations of what is happening in the world. This paper project prompts students to examine the “why” of political protest by focusing on a specific protest or small sets of protests. By examining the historical roots of these protests, and how formal political institutions of American Politics, as well as other institutions (media, public opinion) respond to political protest, you will ultimately gain a more nuanced understanding of why people choose to engagein contentious political action, despite potential personally devastating consequences at the hand of the government.

  • Who is protesting?
    • What specific groups/people have protested/claim they represent the protestors (depending on your topic this may be different)?
    • Do they represent or are they a part of a social movement or interest group?
  • What are they protesting and Why?
    • What are the stated issues or inequalities being protested?
      • What political traditions, government institutions, or political developments create or exacerbate these issues and inequalities?
    • What are they doing/did they do?
    • What is/was the response?
      • From government actors
      • From the public (including media, public opinion, counter social movement/interest groups)
  • Where did the protests happen?
    • Were they isolated to one place? One time period? Did they extend outside of the US?
  • When did this happen?
    • Is this happening during a specific historic moment?
    • If the protests are currently happening, why now?
  • How does this protest(s) fit into (or not) a larger history of political struggle?
    • Did the issue ever get resolved (if you’re looking at a historical event)?

The prompt I picked is in the attachment, just in case I will type here again: Stonewall Riot

  • Pretty much you only need to write up to 2000 word rough draft (regardless of the grammar or word choice), but make sure to finish it ASAP. I don’t have any requirments on quality of the work.
