CURRENT TRENDS IN THE SOCIOLOGICAL LITERATURE THAT SPEAK TO URBAN POVERTY

• Examine current trends in the sociological literature that speak to urban poverty. Why do some cities seem to be thriving while others seem to be in collapse?
• How are the urban poor making out? Why? And what can be done in response?

Topic Choice: Current trends in the sociological literature that speak to urban poverty. Why: I chose this topic because I have personal experience with living in urban poverty. If you are like me, you feel compassion for people that are living in poverty in third world countries; but often we don’t see the people living in poverty here. It is obvious that there is an obligation here that needs to be met in some communities. Structural Functionalism includes things like education and healthcare and the quality varies depending on social location. From Conflict Theory perspective, capitalism creates poverty, making economic systems the source of inequality. Symbolic Theory can relate to poverty by how the poor are treated and how others interact with people who live in poor neighborhoods
