Relationship Between the Two Variables Hypothesis Experimental Design Project

  • Start with your randomly assigned IV and DV from variables (i will provide 50 varibale in word document, you can choose any of them)
  • Generate a hypothesis about the relationship between the two. Your hypothesis doesn’t have to be right – in fact, the dumber the argument, the more fun we’ll have with this. Ideally, you want a completely ridiculous argument that’s still theoretically possible. Think babies strapped to ancient warriors!
  • Develop an experimental design that you think can do the best job of assessing the relationship between the two variables you were assigned. Make sure you include:
    • IVs and levels of IVs (if applicable – some designs may just have variables that are related). You may add more IVs if you think doing so would improve the study.
    • DVs (again, if applicable). As with IVs, feel free to add more IVs if you think doing so would improve the study.
    • Design type – Will your study include random assignment to treatment conditions or not? What kind of random assignment (matching vs block vs cluster vs individual)? Will the study be posttest only? Pre-post? How many posttests? Will each variable be assessed B/S or W/S?
    • What are potentially relevant control variables (how will you measure them? What steps will you take to control them?
    • Remember to address where your participants are coming from. How will you select participants? Will it be random, or not?
  • Think about at least one threat to validity or alternative hypothesis inherent in your design and document it
  • Identify (if you can) a change you could make to address that threat to validity
