INSTRUCTIONS FOR THE ESSAY : Theme Analysis on “Eveline” – 5-sentence paragraph

Themes are the universal aspects of the story. They are NOUNS, such as: love, hate, greed, war etc. There are over a dozen themes in “Eveline.”

5-Sentence structure paragraph (see Module 1 for model)

Thesis. Sentence. “Q.” Sentence. Q.” Sentence. “Q.” Conclusion

Thesis: Include title and author and a CAUSE/EFFECT relationship between three themese.  EX: In “Eveline” James Joyce is saying that A&B causes C.  Or …A causes B&C.  After thesis: support each noun with an example from the story WITHOUT REPEATING the noun, but finding another word or way to say it.  Then, CONCLUSION: must come back to WHAT THE AUTHOR IS SAYING ABOUT LIFE.

INCORRECT EXAMPLE:

In “Eveline James Joyce is saying that war and hunger lead to misery. Eveline joins the Marine Corps to fight the enemy. “…Eveline enlisted on May 1.” Her platoon ran out of food. “…nothing to eat for days.” She wished she had never joined up. “Eveline…longed for the comforts of home.” Joyce is saying thatwhen people march off to serve their country things are not always as they imagined.
