This presentation is an opportunity to explore the world of design and get to know a well-known designer, as well as his/her work, within a variety of fields. a)Content – include the following components:
i)Brief Description of the Designer
Gather relevant biographical information (e.g. family background, challenges faced).
Explain the field(s) within which the designer works/worked.
Who influenced this designer?
Brief discussion of career – popularity (commercial success and critical reception) both during his/her lifetime and posthumously.
ii)Analysis of the Designer’s Work
Discuss the designer’s ability to work within/transcend multiple fields.
Analyze the designer’s target audience and demographic appeal.
Analyze the designer’s larger purpose and what his/her work is meant to achieve.
Describe his/her design style and working methods (e.g. modern vs. traditional; solo or collaborative).
Discuss factors such as form and function, and potential emotions the work may conjure.
Consider elements related to designed pieces – colour, texture, lighting, shapes/angles, mood or atmosphere; any other specific techniques.
Examine recurring themes, images/logos, motifs, and symbolism.
Consider the impact the designer has made in a local arena and/or a global context, and overall, as an innovator.
iii)Opinion/Personal Reaction
Examine one key defining piece of this designer’s career.
Provide your opinion of the piece and its wider purpose. Consider explaining how the piece/work appeals to the senses of sight, sound, touch and feeling.
Justify what you particularly liked or disliked about the piece and other aspects of the designer’s work and why.
Evaluate how the designer’s work has withstood the test of time. Explain its relevance or lack of it in current society. Evaluate the potential for the work to have a lasting relevance.
