OPTION II:If your group decides to take this direction, the expectation is that your focus is moretechnical, graphic, and visual though there is still a written component to the project.Here is the layout of the assignment:You will choose a particular street, anywhere in the United States (spend some timeusing Google Maps/Earth to explore and play around — looking for streets that you areboth familiar and not familiar with!!). You will create a document that describes waysin which your group – a consulting firm – is going to come up with design solutions toexisting challenges found in this street. This project will require some backgroundresearch, a set of visual representations of the existing conditions, suggestedimprovements/policy recommendations and corresponding visuals, and finally asection in which you describe these improvements/policy recommendations

.Required ElementsSection I – Introduction (approximately 300 words)

Describe the street you have chosen, the city and neighborhood it is located within, andbasic demographic information (median incomes, race, ethnicity, commute patterns) ofthat neighborhood

.Section II – Existing Transportation Infrastructure (photographs, images, maps andapproximately 250 words)Describe the types of streets (rectilinear, curvilinear, cul-de-sac). Look at, and includemaps and photographs of the street and surrounding neighborhood you’ve chosen tohelp determine the predominant street type. Also, what is wrong with this street? Is it toobusy, too much traffic, dangerous for pedestrians, blighted, lacking sidewalks, etc…7

Section III – Improvements/Policy Recommendations (MOSTLYdiagrams/photographs/etc…and just a few words or captions to describe each visualelement 100 words)This will be the bulk of your project. Here, you will draw/design/conceptualize what yourrecommendations will be to improve the safety, functionality, design, and overall use ofyour street. You will use any visual and/or graphic materials and techniques you wouldlike to visually convey your policy recommendations. It is up to you and your group as tohow best to accomplish this – you likely have far greater knowledge of online resources toassist with photographs, graphics, diagrams, and other visually relevant means to helpwith this section.SOME policy ‘fixes’ and issues to consider: Complete Streets, Green Infrastructure,Micro-mobility, sidewalks, public space, traffic calming, business/commerce…

Section IV – Policy Descriptions (approximately 500-750 words)This section is essentially a short written narrative to go along with the recommendationsmade in section III above. So, if you suggest, for instance that sidewalks are re-designedto be 14 feet wide, instead of 4 feet wide (And you visually represent that withdiagrams/photographs in section III) you will briefly describe the benefits of this designhere referencing ideas/concepts/theories discussed in class and/or course readings

.Groups will present their plan in a professional and engaging way. The delivery should beprofessional, academic, serious and engaging.This could include, but is not limited to: shortdocumentary, GIS, Story Map, photograph (digital or standard), film, archival, mediarepresentation, video representation, art, or other dependent on student interest and instructorapproval. Though Google Slides, Powerpoint, and/or Prezi can be used as the presentation tool, it isexpected that the groups go beyond simply showing images and text. More information will beprovided as we approach the presentation dates.
