Your first Global Education Learning Objective is a critical review and analysis of a scientific article.  It’s a review of original research. The article is from the Journal of the American Heart Association published in 2019.   It’s a research study on how living in a food desert (you learned about these in Module 2) is adversely related to cardiovascular health.  Heart and blood vessel disease (also called heart disease (????????)) includes numerous problems, many of which are related to a process called atherosclerosis (????????).

Atherosclerosis is a condition that develops when a substance called plaque builds up in the walls of the arteries. This buildup narrows the arteries, making it harder for blood to flow through. If a blood clot forms, it can block the blood flow. This can cause a heart attack or stroke.  Here is the article:

Please be mindful of your word count as the assignment should be about 2+ pgs long (double spaced with 12 pt., Times New Roman font). Introduction:

1. After reading the introduction, explain in your own words, the reason(s) why the authors chose to conduct this research study. What scientific question is being addressed?  (3 pts)  Hint:  you need to include the previous research done, and why it is important, and what scientific question is being addressed.
2. What is the authors’ hypothesis? If no hypothesis is stated, what is the author(s)’ objective? (3 pts) Hint:  A hypothesis is a testable statement, not a question.

3. What inclusion and or exclusion criteria were used to select the participants for the study? Why? (3 pts)  Hint:  Please make sure you give all of the criteria of how the participants were selected to be included and also discuss why potential participants were excluded.

4. Describe the study design. (4 pts) Hint:  Please review the class presentation.  You can also use the link below on study design and include the terminology used in that link, as well as a brief overview of the study design.  Your answer should let me know you understand what was being done in the study.

5. Briefly summarize the results described in the text. (3 pts)  Hint:   Please do not refer to tables without talking about the data itself.  Your answer should let me know that you understand the results that were obtained from the study.

6. What conclusion(s) do the authors draw from these results? (3 pts)  Hint:  this may be different from the actual study results so make sure you support your answer with specific examples.

Discussion

7. Do you think that the study results supported the authors’ hypothesis? Why or why not? (3 pts)  Hint:  Please justify your answer with specifics from the research.

8. What are possible future research areas related to this topic? (3 pts)  Hint:  this is 3 points so please either expand  on the research done (how could you make it better) or purpose the next step with details.
