ENGL 102 Rutgers University Breadcrumbs and Stones by Lisa Goldstein Discussion

Please read the story “Breadcrumbs and Stones,” by Lisa Goldstein. Please write an essay in response to one of the questions below. Keep in mind that your essay should propose a thesis, be framed with topic sentences, and offer analysis and textual support. Remember that it should be well-organized and grammatically correct. You may use a dictionary, and you may use a handbook. Be sure to save enough time and energy to proofread your essay.

Option 1:

Near the end of the story, the narrator complains that “it seemed to me that all my life my mother had given me the wrong story, her made-up tales instead of Hansel and Gretel, had given me breadcrumbs instead of stones” (406). Use this quote to offer an overall interpretation of “Breadcrumbs and Stones.”

Option 2:

Sarah, the narrator’s sister, startles her when she reveals that she is haunted by the experiences of her grandparents, who perished in a concentration camp:

I think about it all the time, that something terrible is going to happen. That’s why I don’t have any furniture, because at the back of my mind—at the back of my mind I always think, What if I have to flee? (391-392)

Although the narrator at first “want[s] to laugh” at the use of the word “flee,” this idea of fleeing—or being prepared to flee—recurs throughout the story. Write an essay in which you use Goldstein’s theme of fleeing to analyze the story as a whole.
