SPC 2017 Banning Gun Control Monroe’s Motivated Sequence Paper

Chapter 14 of your text book, and module 8, outlines Monroe’s Motivated Sequence, which is the five step plan for organizing the persuasive speech.

1. Name and give a brief explanation of the five steps and create a breakdown by providing a working example of how the steps flow.

Working Example (Adler, Rodman, & DuPre):

Topic: Organ Donation:

  1. Attention step: “Someday someone you know may be on the organ donation list; it might even be you.  Pop singer Selena Gomez’s life was saved because her friend. Francia Rasia donated a kidney to her because of kidney failure due to Lupus.”
  2. Establish Need step: (problem) “Organizations such as the National Kidney Foundation have reported there is a lack of life-saving organs for those in need, and kidneys are the most needed.  The average wait time for an organ is 3.6 years according to the NKF depending on health and compatibility.”
  3. Satisfy Need step: (solutions)”Live or postmortem organ donation benefits both the donor’s family and the recipient and saves a life. Consequences to not donating means an inevitable death sooner than later”
  4. Visualize Results step: (opinion) “Donating an organ could be one of the greatest gifts you could ever give and can save a life.”
  5. Action step: “Sign an organ donor card today; or volunteer to donate your organ to a person in need.”

2. Explain how this process is more effective in persuasion than just giving an opinion and telling the audience what to do.
