Girls Flex: True Strength Comes From Within

Girls Flex is a Chicago, Illinois, nonprofit launched by Nicole Moore in 2016. Moore, a former college basketball player with a degree in Visual Communications from Loyola University in Chicago, set out to provide a space to nurture girls in the region. She notes on her organization’s website that her goal is “to empower all women and girls to be fit and free in a society that limits their abilities.” She uses her experiences as a basketball coach and collaborates with other leaders in Girls Flex to provide girls with needed information and experience that will help them thrive. Girls Flex focuses on teaching girls to love themselves and others and to develop healthy lifestyles through exercise, nutrition, and mentoring. Their motto is “True strength comes from within.” Some of their recent events have included a yoga event and talk for girls 6 to 13 years of age, with topics of discussion ranging from preventing cyberbullying, Women’s History Month, and women who have inspired them. They also host health and wellness fairs and girls’ empowerment workshops. The nonprofit acknowledges that due to a lack of resources in their Chicago community, it is difficult for girls to learn some of the most important tools they will need to live a happy and healthy life. They are working to address that gap in resources and knowledge (Bates & Swan, 2020).
