PFC Color Theory Discussion

This week we have been exploring the properties of color and how it serves as the most vivid element of art. Color is powerful, and our impressions of it are based on personal, subjective experiences, depending on our culture and associations. For centuries, artists have used color to express meaning or emotion.

For this week’s discussion, find an example of a work of art that uses the element of color in a moving or provocative way. Analyze how the artist has employed color, being sure to refer to the vocabulary for this week on color theory (see the Overview page for a list of important terms – analogous, complementary, temperature, chroma, tint, etc). Here are some questions to consider when writing your post: How does the use of color strike you? What do you think was the artist’s intended effect? Is there a specific mood that is conveyed? How does the use of color relate to the content of the work of art or its context?

Include an image (EMBED the image in your post rather than add it as an attachment). Please give the artist’s name, title of the work, date, and where you accessed it (Museum website). You can search for an image through Google’s Arts and Culture Collections website, which offers links to Museum collections around the world (make sure it’s a work of art from a fine arts institution). From here, you can explore a variety of collections, find a work of art that speaks to you, download it to your computer, and upload it to embed the image into this discussion post. Please DO NOT use a work of art covered in the textbook chapter or this week’s lecture.

As an alternative, if you are an artist, you may instead upload an image of your own work, and then write a brief statement for your post as far as how you have used color in your work.

Don’t forget you must always reply to at least TWO other students’ posts thoughtfully, in multiple sentences, in order to receive full credit. Please view the rubric attached to this assignment for more information on how you’ll be graded. The format for all discussions and requirements are always the same as far as checking for grammar/spelling, writing in complete sentences and paragraphs, no abbreviations or slang (LOL), etc. For full credit, make sure you take your time composing a thoughtful post and proofread for errors.
