The subject that I wish to address doing this course, is the issue of mental illness among the homeless community. The condition of homelessness is pervasive throughout many of our communities and there are many theories of why. Many people find themselves homeless for many different reasons, including drug and alcohol usage, however it has been shown that many of the homeless population according to a 2015 assessment by the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development, 564,708 people were homeless on any given night in the United States. A minimum of 25% of which are seriously mentally ill and 45% have a mental illness. In comparison in a 2016 study found that 4.2 % of the united states population have been diagnosed with a serious mental illness. This subject requires intervention from all community and political agencies to bring these mentally ill people from walking the streets and sleeping on the streets to a hospital or community related program that will give them better care and safer places to live.
