UCLA Social Movements Role Discussion

INSTRUCTIONS:

The following discussion questions cover Week 3 module. Please choose one of the questions and post your comment. After you post your comment, you will be able to see other classmates’ comments. Please respond to two classmates’ comments.

Your comment should be at least 100 words. Each of your responses to two classmates should be two or three sentences (around 30 words for each). Please respect your classmates’ opinions. No insults are allowed and tolerated.

Please include parenthetical citations, if you cite any materials. The citations should have at least the authors’ last names and page numbers. For example, (Tilly, 10). Any plagiarized comments will not be graded as participation points. You are discouraged to use outside sources. If you still have to use them, you MUST include both parenthetical citations and Works Cited at the end.

Your comment and responses are both due on Thursday, October 21 at 11:59 PM PST.

Please choose ONE:

1) How did social movements address social and economic issues during the Great Depression? How did the movements inform Franklin D. Roosevelt’s New Deal policies? Please focus on the case of Townsend Movement. To support your argument, please cite and discuss two examples from Amenta’s article, American Yawp, and/or Roosevelt’s First Inaugural Address.

2) During WWII, how did U.S. government and society question the loyalty of racially marginalized communities, especially Japanese Americans, in the U.S.? From John Okada and Minoru Kiyota’s stories, please discuss (1) what Japanese American incarceration was briefly and (2) two examples of how their loyalty was questioned.

3) During the Cold War, how did the U.S. question the loyalty of radical activists? How did these activists respond? Please consider the dynamics of race, gender, and sexuality in their activism, citing and discussing two examples from Dayo Gore’s reading and assigned videos.

Note: if you want to answer more than one of the questions, that’s okay and great. But you must spend at least 100 words for each answer, not for all of your answers.
