Writing Homework Help
University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill Where Is My Childhood Poem
I’m working on a Writing exercise and need support.
This can be fictional or a personal narrative. It may help to think about identity categories (gender, sexuality, age, race, ethnicity, ability, religion, family, socioeconomic status, occupation, education, etc.). Pick one or multiple, and craft your performance around the everyday performance of identity. This performance should loosely engage with structures of power, issues around identity and society, and be a carefully executed performative rendition of your work.
For my performance I was thinking of doing a 35-40 line poem about myself, a white middle class kid who grew up playing sports and is now close to graduating college; now, facing adulthood and all the responsibilities that go along with that. In this poem I would like for you to reflect back to what it is like being a kid who played sports and how when you are growing up you don’t have many responsibilities. This poem should be designed and written like “A coming of Age poem”. Growing up I played football, baseball, and basketball. I enjoyed long boarding and also rode bikes and dirt bikes in my free time. In this poem, just really focus on white kid growing up in the suburbs who played football in high school and college and had many hobbies, but is now starting to face reality and isn’t quite sure exactly what he wants to do.
